The policy of medical neglect adopted by Israeli Prison Service (IPS) has led to aggravation of health conditions among Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
Detainees and Ex-detainees Affairs Committee said, in a statement on Saturday, the health conditions of a number of Palestinian prisoners held in Ashkelon and Rimon prisons have been continuously worsening due to the continuation of medical negligence policy pursued by IPS.
The lawyer of the Committee, Mutaz Sheqairat, said the health status of captive Mohammad al-Arqan from al-Khalil is very serious. He has been suffering for 13 years from a tumor in the liver which has not been removed yet despite doing the examination required. For the past two months, his condition has been seriously worsening.
Prisoner Khalid Hasan al-Qadi, who is sentenced to 14 years and a half and held in Rimon prison, is suffering from Hepatitis (B). He got infected with the virus at the prison’s dental clinic on March 22, 2014.
Qadi said he was transferred to the prison’s clinic two weeks earlier, but the doctor there refused to see him. He added that his immunity has been very week to the extent that he has not been able to move well, asking for a specialized doctor.
Lawyer Karim Ajweh said detainee Ali Mohammad Hassan from Qalqilya is suffering from multiple health problems the most significant of which are breathing difficulty and backache (Disk). He is held in Ashkelon prison and sentenced to life and seven years.
Prisoner Hassan said he has not been receiving the appropriate treatment which worsened his backache. It has affected his legs, leaving him unable to walk unless he uses crutches.
Palestinian Detainees Continue to be Denied Medical Treatment
Sick Palestinian detainees held in Israeli jails continue to suffer from the prison administration's systematic policy of medical negligence, further worsening already precarious health conditions, the detainees and ex-detainees affairs committee stated, on Saturday.
Palestinian prisoners are held in overcrowded cells which lack basic health standards, WAFA Palestinian News & Info Agency reports, including the infestation of insects and rats, extreme cold and lack of heating methods, in addition to leakage of waste water into their cells, further aggravating their already poor and unacceptable conditions.
Lawyer for the committee, Mo’taz Shqirat, highlighted the cases of three prisoners whose health conditions are continuingly deteriorating, due to the Israeli prison administration's failure to provide them with the necessary medical treatment.
Mohammad al-Arqan, a resident of Hebron who was sentenced to life in Rimon Israeli prison, suffers from extremely difficult health conditions; he was diagnosed with liver cancer almost 13 years ago, during which the prison administration did not allow him to undergo the necessary surgery to eradicate the tumor in its early stages, further worsening his case.
Al-Arqan’s health condition has extremely worsened during the past two months; he reported that he gets no relief, not even temporarily, with any available painkillers; the prison administration, with its continued deliberate medical negligence is fully responsible for his rapidly deteriorating health condition.
Meanwhile, prisoner Khaled al-Qadi, a resident of Gaza sentenced to 14 and a half years in Rimon, reports that he is in an urgent need of medical help, as his immune system is extremely low and is unable to move.
Al-Qadi was diagnosed with the Hepatitis B virus, which he said was transmitted to him by the prison’s dental clinic in March of 2014. He said that he has been left untreated since then, noting that he was transferred to the prison clinic almost two weeks ago but was denied treatment by a doctor who claimed to have been busy at the time.
Regarding the case of Ali Hassan, from Qalqilia, who was sentenced to life plus an additional seven years in Asqalan prison, various health problems were reported, including respiratory difficulties and problems in both the second and third vertebrae, in his spinal column.
Hassan has also been denied medical treatment by the prison administration, further worsening his back pain, which has traveled down through his legs and rendered him unable to walk without the help of crutches.
WAFA additionally reports that, according to Minister of Prisoners' Affairs, Issa Qaraqe, the number of sick prisoners detained in Israeli jails has now reached some 1,500, 80 of whom are suffering from serious health problems and are not receiving the necessary treatment; they suffer from malignant diseases, paralysis and disabilities, in addition to cases of mental illness and neurological disorder.
Furthermore, according to Addameer human rights association, “Israeli authorities responsible for prisoners regularly neglect their duties to provide medical support for Palestinian prisoners in their care, as required by the Geneva Conventions.”
“Medical problems are widespread, and range in severity from chest infections and diarrhea to heart problems and kidney failure. Treatment is often inadequate and is delivered after substantial delays. Often medication is limited to over-the-counter pain killers.”

The Israeli army kidnapped, on Friday evening, three Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, claiming that the three men infiltrated into an area in the Eshkol Regional Council of Settlements.
The army said the three Palestinians entered the area through a gap in the border fence, east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.
It claimed that the kidnapped Palestinians “carried knives,” and have been moved to an Israeli security center for interrogation.

Sheikh Ikrema Sabri, head of the Supreme Islamic Council, strongly condemned Friday Palestinian children’s arrest at the hands of Israeli forces in violation of international conventions on child’s rights.
Palestinian children are deliberately targeted by Israeli occupation authorities, he said during his Friday sermon at the Aqsa Mosque, adding they are arrested, assaulted, and put on trial in illegal courts just to increase their fear and horror.
Sheikh Sabri underlined that any Israeli court’s ruling against Palestinian children is an invalid and illegal sentence.
He pointed out that all Israeli political parties declared total support to the Jewish religious groups’ proposal to allow Jews to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque as part of the “unethical competition in the Israeli elections.”
"Therefore, there is no difference between Israeli left-wing and right-wing parties as there is no difference between an extremist and non-extremist Jew, they are all the same", he continued.
Sheikh Sabri stressed that Israeli escalated break-ins into al-Aqsa Mosque would never give any legitimacy to Jews’ presence in the holy shrine, denouncing Israeli police’s brutal attacks against Jerusalemite women stationed there.

Wide prison transfers were carried out over the past few days against several Palestinian prisoners in Ofer, Eshel, Ramon, Megiddo, and Nafha jails.
Lawyer of the Palestinian prisoner society Jawad Bolos said that Israeli prison department in Ofer jail had transferred 50 detainees to different jails without allowing them to take their clothes and personal belongings.
Some other prisoners were also transferred from Nafha, Ramo and Ofer to other jails, Bolos added.
The transfer campaign aims at foiling Palestinian prisoners’ intended protest steps, which were declared to take place between mid-March and April, he noted.
He said the prisoners would state their protest steps against those transfers later.
