Family denies 'axe attack' pretext for deadly shooting

A Palestinian man who was shot dead by Israeli security agents outside Nablus today did not attack them before they opened fire, his family maintains.
Hatem Shadid of the Illar village was driving when his car collided with an Israeli jeep near the Beit Lid village. One of the occupants of the car, a Shin Bet agent, later shot him.
Israeli officials said Shadid had attacked the agents with an axe but his family disputed the account saying he was going about his day normally when the incident occurred.
Relatives told Ma'an that Hatim left his home after dawn prayer to Nablus, then he traveled back to Tulkarem where he works at a construction company, before he was shot dead.
Israeli forces later broke into the victim's home in Illar and detained three of his brothers for interrogation. His wife was also questioned at home, Shadid's sister told Ma'an.
She added that 30 Israeli soldiers and an intelligence officer ransacked the house. The soldiers confiscated medical reports and other documents. She said Hatim suffered from back problems.
Relatives told Ma'an that reports the victim had attacked the agents were false.
"He crosses several military checkpoints every day, and the Israelis are only trying to give trivial pretexts to justify the killing," a cousin of the victim said.
The family called upon the Palestinian government and president to investigate the killing of Hatim "in cold blood" highlighting that he left behind five children aged 1-12 years.

Palestinian prisoners seeking to win POW status

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli occupation jails have launched a campaign to win recognition as prisoners of war after Palestine was admitted as a non-member observer at the UN.
The prisoners in a statement published on Tuesday demanded their treatment as POWs and as freedom fighters, who were kidnapped and arbitrarily arrested by occupation.
They said that they were preparing “struggle steps” to demand their treatment as POWs and to reject the military measures and prison laws that violate legitimacy of their national struggle.

An Israeli army spokeswoman told Ma'an that three boats had "deviated from the official designated fishing area."
"Navy forces acted in accordance with the rules of engagement and called on the boats to return to the designated area," she told Ma'an. "When they failed to comply, they were taken to Ashdod port and transferred into the custody of the security forces," she said.

Occupation arrests two citizens and shot another in al-Khalil

The occupation authorities arrested at dawn today two citizens from al-Khalil and Bethlehem, and shot another in the town of Dura in al-Khalil in the southern West Bank.
Local sources said that the occupation soldiers arrested a young man from Bethlehem and another from the town of al-Dhahiriya south of al-Khalil, after raiding and searching their houses.
Another 22-year-old Palestinian youth was wounded on Saturday evening with Israeli bullets in the abdomen, during clashes that had erupted between the citizens and soldiers in the town of Dura, south of al-Khalil.
Meanwhile, confrontations took place between the residents of the village of Urif, south of the city of Nablus in the northern West Bank, and the occupation forces which stormed the village, on Saturday afternoon.
The villagers said that the occupation troops attacked the village after an incursion by a number of settlers from the "Yitzhar" settlement, established on the village's land.
The soldiers fired tear gas towards the protesters which resulted in the suffocation of a number of civilians.
This is not the first time in which the IOF storms Urif, as the village has been subjected, since several months to repeated break-ins by the settlers who have been attacking the people and destroying the agricultural crops.
The settlers had also tried to burn Al-Mourabitoun mosque in the village, two weeks ago, and had attacked the village school.
Meanwhile, Rateb al Jabour, the coordinator of the "Popular Committee Against the settlement" in the town of Yatta, told "Quds Press" agency that Israeli soldiers blocked the road preventing a group of Palestinian farmers from reaching their lands in the area "Qawawis" near the settlement of "Ovijal", built on the lands of the town of Yatta, south of the city of al-Khalil, and forced them to return to their homes.
The farmers were heading to their lands for plowing and planting them after the occupation Supreme Court issued a decision allowing them to enter the lands of which they had confirmed ownership.
