Human rights activist: Prisoners issue should rise above all differences

Palestinian human rights activists expressed their regret at the refusal of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and its institutions to take part in the conference supporting the Palestinian prisoners that kicked off Saturday in Tunisia.
The researcher at Tadamun Foundation for human rights, Ahmed Beitawi, told Quds Press: "The participation in this conference is obligatory and necessary because the issue of Palestinian prisoners should be on the top priorities and should rise above all political differences between the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip."
He called on all Palestinian governmental and non-governmental human rights organizations to unite their efforts in order to serve the prisoners' case.
Beitawi stressed the importance of international conferences in supporting the captives, noting that they represent a step towards internationalizing the prisoners' issue. He called for developing a detailed and systematic plan to support this issue at the legal, media and public levels.
The "Change and Reform" bloc in the Palestinian Legislative Council considered that hosting an international conference supporting Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails by Tunisia is "a natural outgrowth of the Arab Spring revolutions and proves the recognition that the prisoners are defenders of the dignity of the Arab and Islamic nation."
The bloc described in a statement on Saturday the conference as a "great initiative" and hoped that it will "lead to more events able to liberate the captives."
The international conference in support of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails kicked off this morning in the Tunisian capital, Tunis, under the official auspices of the Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki.

Interrogation of Addameer Researcher, Ayman Nasser, Extended Once Again

Addameer researcher and human rights defender, Ayman Nasser, has his interrogation period extended by an Israeli military court for a further seven days. Ayman, who was arrested on 15 October 2012, has now spent 25 consecutive days in interrogation, some of which involved 20 hours of interrogation, during which time his hands have been constantly handcuffed behind his back.
Ayman appeared before the Moskobiyyeh Israeli military court in Jerusalem, where the prosecution requested that his interrogation period be extended for 12 days. However, following the intervention of Addameer lawyer Mahmoud Hassan, this was reduced to seven days.
Addameer are particularly concerned for Ayman's health, considering the length of some of the interrogation sessions, which have risen to 20 hours in duration. These interrogations are causing Ayman immense back pain and he continues to be denied the appropriate medication. As previously reported Ayman suffers from a number of health issues including inflammation in his colon and back pain. Until his arrest he was receiving constant medical treatment by specialized doctors.
When not in interrogation Ayman continues to be held in isolation in a cell that is 2 meters in height and 1.5 meters in length. The air condition is continuously on a low temperature, emitting cold air and causing Ayman severe distress, while he only has one blanket with which to keep himself warm. The sole light in Ayman's cell is on continuously, making it difficult for Ayman to sleep. Due to the conditions of his isolation Ayman does not know if it is day or night.
The main focus of his interrogation continues to be his civic activities relating to his role in advocating for the rights of Palestinian political prisoners and his involvement in the Handala Center, which is an educational, artistic center in Ayman's village Saffa and of which Ayman is the Chairperson.
Addameer is also concerned that the interrogation sessions are not being recorded which leave open the possibility of abuse by the interrogators.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Bassam al-Saadi launched his hunger strike until the release of his wife who was arrested by the IOF in the light of the ongoing suffering of his family, which is constantly targeted by the occupation forces.
The lawyer Ibrahim al-Araj confirmed that the prisoner al-Saadi started an open hunger strike protesting against his wife's arrest, calling all forces to pressure the occupation for her release especially that she is the breadwinner for her family.
Sheikh al-Saadi's children are shocked in light of the absence of their father and mother, especially after the Israeli decision to renew al-Saadi's administrative detention for six months during the Eid al-Adha where he did not spend the Eid with his family since 12 years ago.
Sheikh al-Saadi's son, Ezzedin, stated that his mother's arrest came in light of the Israeli deliberate targeting of the family, pointing out that his mother was arrested in order to pressure his father.
Today we are living in a great concern, especially after our father's hunger strike until my mother's release, and this means that we are facing new challenges as a family, he added.

Occupation threatens the prisoners before releasing them

Al Tadhamon Foundation for Human Rights said that the Israeli intelligence service has been recently questioning some captives who almost completed their sentences.
The Foundation reported in a press statement that the Israeli intelligence service at Salem Camp has been often interrogating the prisoners who have served long periods in custody and whose dates of release approach.
It noted that the purpose behind such procedure is to threaten the prisoners of re-arresting them if they return to any act that "affects the Israeli security", and to tell them they are being watched by the Shin Bet.
Al Tadhamon Foundation also pointed out that the Israeli intelligence is trying to take verbal commitments from the prisoner, before his release, not to return to resisting the occupation, and that it has been summoning the leaders of various Palestinian factions to discuss political issues and intimidate them.
