Israel Wants Detainees To Pay For Their Medical Expenses

The Palestinian Ministry of Detainees reported Monday that the Israeli Prison Authority is demanding Palestinian political prisoners to pay for their own medical expenses, and refused to provide them with the needed medical equipment or medications.
The Ministry denounced the Israeli decision and said that Israel, as the country that is holding thousands of Palestinian detainees, has the legal and moral responsibility to provide them with the needed care, as stated by the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions regarding civil and political rights.
It added that this Israeli policy is a policy of extortion and blackmail, and is depriving the detainees from the urgently needed medical attention and treatment.

Lawyer: A Palestinian child attempted suicide in an Israeli jail

Human rights lawyer Heba Masaleha said one of the Palestinian children detained in an Israeli jail tried to commit suicide as a result of the severe depression he suffers from because of his exposure to maltreatment at the hands of jailers. Masaleha refrained from mentioning the name of the child, but she said she visited him in jail.
She stated that the child has been staying in bed for three days without moving or talking to anyone, except about his intention to commit suicide, adding that the child cannot sleep properly at night and already refused to eat food for two days.
She affirmed that the prison doctor said the child suffered from a psychological problem, adding that the prison administration also brought an Arab doctor from Nazareth to oversee him without any noticeable improvement in his condition.
Aside from their exposure to abuse and humiliation at the hands of Israeli soldiers and jailers, the mere separation of the Palestinian minors and children from their parents and families causes them to suffer psychologically, the lawyer warned.
In another incident, the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) kidnapped a group of Palestinian minors working as a drum band without any reason, according to Bayarek center for prisoners' affairs on Sunday.
The center said that the children were on their way to a Palestinian folkloric festival that was held in the West Bank in solidarity with prisoner Samer Issawi, who ended his months-long hunger strike recently after a deal with his jailers.
The center underlined that the Israeli occupation regime deliberately kidnap Palestinian children to break their spirits in violation of the international law, which stipulates the need for protecting the children and their right to grow safely without any restrictions on their freedom.
It noted that there are about 321 children, 30 of them patients, in Israeli jails.

Israel occupied the West Bank as well as East al-Quds (Jerusalem), which Palestinians consider the capital of their homeland, during the Six-Day War in 1967.
The Israeli military regularly raids Palestinians' houses in the West Bank arresting activists and civilians, mostly without any charges. Many Palestinians remain under detention in Israeli prisons, where they are given minimal access to their basic rights.
Many of the inmates are under so-called administrative detention.
The administrative detention, often implemented by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian population, is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charges, allowing regime forces to make arrests without formal charges for up to six months. However, the detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

Palestinian released prisoner confirms the prisoners' difficult conditions

The liberated prisoner Imad Deeb Skafi, 35, who was released a few days ago after serving 7 years in Israeli jails, has confirmed that the Palestinian prisoners continue to suffer in Israeli jails and their situation has only deteriorated over time. We were 10 detainees held in a very limited, dark and stinking room that lacks the basic living conditions, he said.
Skafi was detained in 2006 where he was sentenced to 7 years during which he was transferred between 5 Israeli prisons.
The Israeli authorities carried out arbitrary transfer policy against the prisoners to create state of instability and confusion among the prisoners under false pretexts, he confirmed.
He also said that the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) continue to restrict the Palestinian prisoners' right to family visits by obstructing visit programs and by imposing constrains on these programs, stressing that the families of prisoners from the Gaza Strip suffer from the Israel’s persistent denial of their right to visit their imprisoned family members
The IPS prevented family visits for the prisoners from Gaza strip since Hamas took control of the strip in 2007.
He pointed out to the rotten and unhealthy food offered to the prisoners in addition to the Israeli policies of medical neglect and torture against Palestinian prisoners.
Skafi affirmed that the Palestinian prisoners are subjected to physical and psychological torture, including beating, strip searches, insulting, night raids and many other severe torture methods.
Regarding the Israeli psychological torture methods, the liberated prisoner pointed to the Israeli rumors and lies concerning the Captive movement leadership and prisoners' families.
He confirmed that during the Dignity hunger strike that lasted 29 days the IPS prevented the hunger strikers from drinking any fluids except water and isolated them in an attempt to pressure them to break their strike.
Skafi condemned the weak popular and official support to the prisoners' issue, saying that it is only limited to the prisoners' families.
He confirmed that the solidarity events in support of the hunger strikers do not live up to the prisoners' suffering.
