A medical delegation popped in the Israeli Barzilai Hospital Tuesday morning to keep tabs on the health status of hunger-striker Bilal Kayed, starving for the 49th consecutive day.
According to the Palestinian Health Minister, Jawad Awad, a medical delegation appointed by the ministry headed to the hospital to follow up on Kayed’s case.
Prisoner Bilal Kayed, who has been on a hunger strike for 49 days running, has partially lost his sight and undergone dyspnoea (shortness of breath).
Kayed has also lost 32 kilograms of his overall weight due to the hunger strike. The ministry appealed to all international medical organizations to urgently step in and pressure the Israeli occupation to restore Kayed’s freedom before it is too late.
Meanwhile, in a letter written by prisoner Kayed and released by lawyer Farah Dayabseh, from Ad-Dammer Institution for Human Rights, the detainee appealed for being transferred to prison where his fellow-detainees and supporters are held.
Kayed vowed to step up protest moves in response to Israel’s arbitrary administrative detention policy. He reiterated his firm rejection to undergo medical check-ups and treatment. He added that the Israeli prison guards have tied his right hand and left leg to the hospital bed around the clock.
Kayed has also been prevented from family visits. The detainee started an open-ended hunger strike on Jun 15 in protest at being held administratively in Israeli jails, with neither charge nor trial, right after the end of his 15-year-sentence.
