Red Cross officials on Sunday evening refused to allow families of prisoners to enter the agency's headquarters in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, east Jerusalem, to stage a sit-in in solidarity with hunger-striking detainees.
The family committee of Jerusalemite detainees said that prisoners' families headed to the Red Cross headquarters for their daily solidarity sit-in when they were surprisingly denied entry to the main yard.
The Red Cross administration did not provide an explanation for its behavior. The families committee deplored the Red Cross for its attitude and described it as a slap in the face of families worried about the lives of their hunger-striking relatives.
"This international organization was supposed to embrace the prisoners' families and visit their sons in Israeli jails instead of closing its headquarters," the committee said. The committee noted that the families had been organizing a sit-in at the Red Cross headquarters in the holy city for about a week.
