Sheikh Ra’ed Salah, head of the Islamic Movement in Israel, was finally allowed on Wednesday to respond to the indictment filed against him by the Israeli prosecutor at the magistrate court in Haifa.
It was the first time Sheikh Salah was able to address the court to refute the charges leveled against him since his detention on August 15, 2017.
Lawyer Khaled az-Zabarqa, a member of the defense crew, stated that Sheikh Salah gave his testimony in response to the indictment filed against him by the Israeli prosecution after muzzling him during all court hearings held since his arrest.

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) has reported that the detainees held, Wednesday, a negotiating session with the Israeli Prison Administration in Ofar Prison, demanding an end to ongoing invasions of their room, and other punitive measures against them, but the demands were rejected, and the administration vowed more sanctions, including additional prison terms, and high fines.
The PPS stated that the detainees have been subject to constant invasions into their rooms, violent searches, and many were forced into solitary confinement, leading to protests, while the soldiers fired many gas bombs and concussion grenades at them, in addition to unleashing the dogs on them.
Several rooms were burnt during the protests in Sections 11 and 15 of the prison, and the Prison Authority said it intends to sentence the detainees in these rooms to four years in prison, in addition to a 40.000 Shekels fine each.
Other sanctions imposed on the detainees include denying them family visits and forbidding them from using the prison canteen, for two months.
At least 150 detainees have been injured by the army; most of them suffered fractures and lacerations after being beaten up by the soldiers, and many others were shot with rubber-coated steel bullets, in addition to dozens who suffered the effects of teargas inhalation.
Many detainees were moved to several hospitals and were later moved back to the prison.
The detainees rejected the Israeli measures, and affirmed their ongoing strike, especially after they returned their meals starting three days ago, and declared that they intend to escalate their protests, unless the Prison Administration revokes the sanctions, and holds serious talks with them.
They said that the talks with the administration did not lead to any positive outcome, especially since the officers participating in these talks, do not have any authority to reach understandings or agreements.
The PPS stated that the detainees are only willing to hold talks with parties that have the needed authority and the decision-making capabilities.
There are 1200 Palestinian political prisoner held by Israel in Ofar prison; nearly 100 of them are children.
All sections of the prison remain closed, while the Prison Authority is still planning more sanctions and invasions into the detainees’ rooms and is not willing to listen to the detainees’ demands.

Activists, accompanied by Israeli and international supporters, are shutting down the recently opened Eastern Ring Road near Jerusalem, which features separate lanes for Palestinians and Israeli settlers, divided by a wall.
A few dozen activists have closed the gates to the newly opened road, and are raising banners to protest apartheid and Israeli attempts to expand and cement control over the West Bank and Jerusalem.
Two protesters have been abducted and 4 protesters were injured at the time of this report. video
The road, which stretches between Road 437 and Road 1, inside the West Bank, features two separate lanes divided by a concrete wall – one for Israeli settlers and the other for Palestinians.
While the Israeli lane allows settlers quick and easy access to the center of Jerusalem, the Palestinian lane is designed to separate Palestinians off through an underpass, so as to not disturb settler traffic into the city.
According to the PNN, construction of the road is planned to continue to the south, further entrenching the two separate and unequal systems of transportation in the West Bank.
The Palestinian part is designated to eventually connect Ramallah to Bethlehem. This plan will enable Israeli authorities to block Palestinians commuting from the south of the West Bank to Ramallah from accessing Road 1, which leads to Jerusalem.
By doing so, the Israeli checkpoint between the West Bank and Jerusalem, which bars Palestinians access to their capital, could be moved several miles to the east, past the Ma’ale Adumin, Mishor Adumim, and Kfar Adumim settlements, in effect annexing them to Jerusalem.
Palestinians fear this is part of Israel’s Greater Jerusalem plan, which includes the expansion of the Ma’ale Adumim settlement into the E1 area, and is related to the displacement of Bedouin communities in the area, including Khan Al Ahmar and Jabal Al Baba.
Palestinian activist Munther Amira said, “Any shame the Occupation may have had of its apartheid policies is now completely gone with this road. We must not and will not allow for their plan of ethnic cleansing in the outskirts of Jerusalem.”
