The administrative detainees continued on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, their hunger strike for the 41st day as there are mounting fears about their lives following a serious decline in their health conditions. 120 administrative prisoners started last April an open-ended hunger strike to pressure their jailers to release them and revoke the secret files which the Israeli intelligence claims to have against them.
Later, about 1,500 Palestinian prisoners joined the hunger strike in solidarity with their administratively detained compatriots.
In a related development, Haaretz newspaper on Tuesday revealed that Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu delegated the security cabinet to speed up Knesset consultations on a bill that will allow Israeli jailers to force-feed Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike.
According to the newspaper, the bill has already passed its first reading in the Knesset and awaits votes to pass second and third readings.

Violent confrontations broke out at dawn Tuesday between the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) and dozens of Palestinian unarmed youths at Hawara military checkpoint, south of Nablus, and at Fawar camp, south of al-Khalil. In Nablus, the confrontations broke out as the Palestinian teenager Alaa Awda was shot dead by the IOF at Zaatara checkpoint, eye-witnesses told a PIC correspondent.
The IOF fired bullets and tear gas canisters at the Palestinian young men who could only react by throwing stones and empty bottles, the eye-witnesses further reported.
Bystanders at the scene further documented IOF incursions east of Nablus, where large numbers of Israeli patrols deployed around several areas, including the Amman Street and the Balata refugee camp, so as to pave the way for settler break-ins into the shrine of Joseph tomb under the religious pretext.
Meanwhile, similar confrontations erupted at Fawar refugee camp, south of al-Khalil, following IOF break-ins into the camp. Arbitrary firing of rubber bullets, tear gas, and sound bombs have been going on throughout.
Scores of Palestinian civilians, including two-year-old children, suffered breathing difficulties throughout the attack, local sources documented.
The Israeli attacks culminated in abrupt invasions into several Palestinian native homes in al-Dhahriya, where Youssef Abu Sharkh was rounded up by the IOF and carried to an unknown destination.
Meanwhile, Rateb Abu Armila was brutally assaulted by the Israeli soldiers.

The Palestinian-American community in Los Angeles Monday staged a stand-in in solidarity with the Palestinian administrative detainees who have been on a hunger strike since last April 24. Within the stand, the participants had salt dissolved in water referring to the symbol of the hunger strike.
The participants confirmed that the Palestinian community is wholeheartedly with the prisoners. They appealed to the international community and organizations to pressure on "Israel" as the health of Palestinian prisoners is seriously deteriorating.
Shaheen Sha'at, the leader of Fatah in America, confirmed the necessity of supporting the detainees and their just cause to force the occupation and the Israeli prison service (IPS) to submit to the international laws that deny the administrative detention policy.
Palestinian artist, Fadel Ayyoub, showed the activists an encaustic of him entitled "Water and Salt". A Palestinian child also lighted a candle and said, "I presented this candle to my prisoner uncle, Maslama Thabet."
Hundreds of administrative prisoners joined in the strike for their 40th day in a row and their lives are in extreme danger, where they demand the Israeli authorities to release them and end the administrative detention unjust policy.
On April 24, around 120 Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails declared a hunger strike to protest their administrative detention.

Hebrew Haaretz newspaper revealed Tuesday morning that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on the Israeli Cabinet to pass the force-feeding law. Force-feeding law is a policy Israel follows to force the hunger-striking Palestinian detainees to break their strike.
The law has been passed in the initial reading but waiting for the second and the third ones in order to be approved.
The Medical Ethics Committee in Israel vehemently rejected the decision, while Netanyahu said that USA allowed force-feeding of Gitmo prisoners.
In a book sent to the Israeli Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice, the committee said that the Israeli authorities should refrain from enacting such a law, and that there should be an understanding relationship between the doctor and the hunger striker on condition that the doctor should be from outside the IPS.
Dozens of the administrative detainees continue an indefinite hunger strike for 41 days in a row to demand an end to the administrative detention policy, which allows for the occupation authorities to extend the detention without formal charge.

Against the backdrop of regional tension following the establishment of the Fatah-Hamas unity government, Israel fears a violent flare-up in the event that one of the security detainees and prisoners who are hunger striking almost dies.
On April 24, 80 Palestinian administrative detainees in Israel launched a hunger strike to protest their imprisonment by administrative orders and not as a result of a trial. The prisoners demanded to be put on trial or to be released immediately. A few days later they were joined by more detainees and security prisoners. As of yesterday, the strike having come to its 40th day, there were 320 detainees and prisoners on strike with 60 of them hospitalized throughout the country under heavy security.
Israel is concerned about the possibility that one or a number of the hunger strikers will die as a result of their protest, and this will cause the region to deteriorate to violence. They are therefore trying to accelerate the implementation of a law that will permit force feeding of the prisoners in order to save their lives.
Two weeks ago the Israeli Ministerial Committee for Legislation approved a bill whose drafting was completed by Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, at the request of the GSS and the Prisons Service, to be allowed to force feed security prisoners at risk of dying. According to the bill, the security prisoners’ right to protest by means of a hunger strike would still be upheld—but in situations in which they are deemed liable to die, the courts would be authorized to accede to the security agencies’ request to order their force feeding.

Intention of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to dissolve the Ministry of Prisoners drew sharp criticism from many Palestinians, and has formed a major obstacle facing the completion of the consultations over the government of national reconciliation. A dispute broke out after Abbas announced his insistence on keeping his current ministers of foreign affairs and Awqaf in their posts, and his intention to replace the ministry of prisoners with an independent committee. This was rejected by Hamas and the announcement of the unity government which was expected on Thursday May 29 has been delayed.
The Minister of Prisoners in Gaza Atallah Abu Sabbah asserted that dissolving the ministry of prisoners would harm the detainees' interests as their file will no longer be addressed on the government table.
He added in statements to the PIC that changing the ministry to an independent body run directly by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) means that this body will recognize the Israeli occupation and will shun violence.
"The prisoners will be thus classified as terrorists by the occupation, according to its standards, and this will disrupt their interests and their salaries; as the supporting forces do not help terrorists", the minister said.
Meanwhile, the ex-captive Taysir al-Bardini, who was liberated in Wafaa al-Ahrar deal, condemned in statements to the PIC the decision to abolish the Ministry of Prisoners as dangerous, saying it would have a negative impact on the case of the prisoners.
The released prisoner Ahmed Fallit said the calls to eliminate the ministry of prisoners' affairs are neither justified, nor responsible and came at the wrong time.
Fallit noted in statements to the PIC that the abolition of the ministry will lead to a significant decline in the services provided for the Palestinian prisoners inside the Israeli occupation jails as well as the liberated prisoners.
For its part, Waed Society for prisoners strongly condemned the decision and the timing of its issuance, which coincides with the “Battle of the Empty Stomachs” waged by the captives for the 40th day Monday.
Spokesman for the association Abdullah Qandil in statements to the PIC said Abbas has turned his back to the prisoners instead of working on internationalizing their issue and exposing the violations of the occupation against them.
Qandil also accused the Palestinian Authority Chairman of capitulating to Israeli, American, and European pressures that aim to harm the prisoners, and added that all Palestinian parties, captives and leaders; including leaders from Fatah movement expressed their rejection of the move.
A state of anger has also prevailed among the prisoners in the occupation jails in protest at Abbas's decision, while nearly 1500 of them are waging an open hunger strike for the 40th day.

Lawyer Ali Sa’ady of the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees managed to visit three hunger-striking detainees at the al-Jalama Israeli Prison, who told him Israel forced them into solitary confinement, under very difficult conditions.
Sa’ady said the detainees are held in cells “darker and colder than graves” since they joined the hunger strike, and are denied basic rights guaranteed by International Law.
He managed to visit Abbas as-Sayyed from Tulkarem, Hasan Salama from Gaza, and Mahmoud Shreiteh from Hebron, who told him their cells are not fit for human use.
In addition, detainee Salama said that Israel ordered him into solitary confinement for 14 days, likely to be extended at any given moment, and also decided to deny family visits to striking detainees for two months.
Salama added that the cells are too small, too dark, lack fundamental components, and have no soap, towels, and covers, in addition to the fact that the detainees have to keep wearing the same clothes.
He further stated that the soldiers are very cruel to them; repeatedly attack and mistreatment them, in an attempt to push them to end their strike, and abandon their legitimate demands.
On his part, detainee as-Sayyed stated that Israel is deliberately placing the striking detainees into solitary confinement to pressure them physically and psychologically, in addition to the serious risks resulting from the bad conditions in those dirty cells that are also humid and unfit for human use.
He added that dozens of striking detainees are in serious health conditions, many facing life-threatening health issues.
Talking at the Ez-Zitouna University in Jordan on Saturday, Palestinian Minister of detainees Issa Qaraqe’, stated that 1500 “will join the strike on Sunday, June 1”, and that the situation could escalate especially since a number of striking detainees are in serious health conditions that could result in their deaths.
Qaraqe’ added that all detainees who have been striking since more than 30 days are now in hospitals, and that some of them have internal bleeding, while others lost consciousness, and many require surgeries, but are ongoing with their strike.

Israel’s TV, Channel 10, has reported that approximately 70 hunger striking Palestinian detainees were moved to twelve Israeli hospitals and medical center, due to sharp deterioration in their health conditions.
Palestinian Detainees, held under arbitrary Administrative Detention orders without charges or trial, started their strike 40 days ago, and were later joined by around 1500 detainees, demanding Israel to stop using Administrative Detention orders against them.
Undersecretary of the Palestinian Ministry of Detainees, Ziad Abu Ein, stated Sunday that more detainees are joining the open-ended hunger strike, and that the detainees are determined to continue their fight despite their bad conditions, and abuse.
He said Israel is escalating its violations against the detainees, continues to challenge International Law and the international community, by the ongoing abuse and assaults against the detainees, and by continuing the use of illegitimate policies of Administrative Detention, with charges or trial.
“The detainees are ongoing with their battle of empty bowels, while Israel is escalating its violations and assaults against them”, Abu Ein stated, “We need to act on all levels to expose Israel’s illegitimate policies, to oblige it to end the use of Administrative Detention”.
He added that the Palestinian leadership, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, is acting on the international level, and contacted various countries, legal and human rights groups, to pressure Israel into stopping its policies, and to provide the detainees with their internationally guaranteed rights.
“With their will and determination, the detainees are defeating the occupation, exposing its policies and crimes”, the official stated, “We need more support to the detainees and their cause, we need more international activities; our people are united, our international relations are much bigger and wider that Israel’s illegitimate occupation; we need to end those crimes”.

The hunger striking administrative detainees entered on Sunday the 39th day of their open-ended hunger strike as their health conditions started to decline seriously. Several human rights groups expressed their fears that the hunger strikers, some of them have medical conditions, became vulnerable to sudden death after their health status reached a life-threatening stage.
The hunger strikers aim to pressure their jailers to improve their incarceration conditions, halt the policy of extending their administrative detention, and release them.
In another context, Palestinian lawmaker Fathi Qaraawi condemned what he described as the current attempts by the Palestinian Authority leadership to dissolve the ministry of prisoners.
Qaraawi stated in press remarks that the PA dealt a blow to all national efforts to support the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and debunked its claims about advocating the issue of the prisoners.
The lawmaker expressed his belief that there is a conspiracy to undermine the protest step of the hunger strikers in Israeli jails, especially since they are mostly from the Hamas Movement.
For his part, Hamas official Housam Badran said that the hunger striking prisoners demonstrated an exemplary steadfastness in the face of the occupation, and called for more popular support for their protest step.
He also demanded the PA to adopt a concrete position in support of the prisoners' hunger strike.

Ramon prison administration decided to transfer the prisoner following a medical diagnosis revealing his exacerbated health status. An urgent transfer-order to Hadarim, besides of the visit-bans, were issued, prisoners told the PIC
According to the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS), detainees Youssef Nawajaa and Salah al-Titi, al-Khalil natives, also suffer from an exacerbated health status due to medical negligence inside of Israeli lock-ups.
The PPS lawyer who visited Youssef Nawajaa, 48, in Ramla prison confirmed the latter suffers from epilepsy, stomachaches, and partial loss of memory in addition to other syndromes.
Nawajaa had initiated a hunger strike for 5 days last January to protest deliberate medical negligence, to which the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) reacted by placing him in solitary confinement.
Salah Titi, 23, suffers from chronicle diseases and has undergone many surgeries before the arrest. Titi’s health status exacerbated remarkably after the arrest. Intestinal infection and high blood pressure are among the symptoms infecting Titi’s body. The prisoner holds two urinary drain bags, the lawyer further documented
Along the same line, mass transfer campaigns of hunger striking prisoners were carried out at dawn Sunday by the IPS so as to thwart the hunger strike initiated to protest Israeli arbitrary detention polices, head of Ahrar Center Fuad al-Khuffash said.
According to Khuffash, such campaigns aim at dampening the prisoners’ spirits and force them to halt the strike. The situation is made worse by solitary confinement and the provocative search campaigns carried out by the IPS so as to crack down on the prisoners.
In a related event, administrative detainee MP Muhammad al-Natsha, without food for 39 days, was carried from Ramla prison to a hospital in Afula in 48 occupied Palestine.
