By Khalid Amayreh in Hebron
Israeli soldiers and paramilitary settlers have been hounding and intimidating a Palestinian journalist who filmed the gruesome murder of an unarmed and badly wounded Palestinian at the hands of an Israeli police officer in Hebron a few days ago.
The film showed the trigger-happy Israeli officer fire several bullets on the head of the bleeding Palestinian, who then succumbed to his fatal wounds.
Israeli army sources alleged that the wounded Palestinian had sought to stab Israeli soldiers. Palestinian eyewitnesses disputed the Israeli narrative. The hair-raising images of the crime generated angry reactions throughout the world. The Israeli foreign ministry reportedly privately complained that the brief sketch might further tarnish Israel’s image.
Israel is already trying to fight a deepening international campaign aimed at boycotting Jewish settlements, viewed as illegal and illegitimate under international law. The campaign, known as Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions (BDS) has already prompted many foreign firms to terminate their operations in the settlements.
Earlier this week, the Israeli army briefly reprimanded the murderer for a few hours. However, the Hebrew media has pointed out that the symbolic detention and interrogation of the murderer was a purely public relations measure, which would mitigate angry reactions and help Israel portray herself as law-abiding country unlike other countries in the Middle East.
According to Palestinian and Israeli human rights workers, when Israeli soldiers are caught “red handed,” e.g. brutally murdering a totally innocent Palestinian and without the slightest provocation, the murderer or murderers are rebuked, not for carrying out the murderous act itself, but for having failed to ensure that no one would film the crime.
On Monday, the Israeli occupation authorities briefly detained Imad Abu Shamsiyya for filming the event using his cellular mobile phone. However, it was apparently too late for the Israeli army to retrieve the film which had already found its way through the world-wide web. Earlier, dozens of settlers surrounded Abu Shansiyya’s home in downtown Hebron, threatening to kill him if he “ever did it again.”
Abu Shamsiyya on Monday appealed to Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmould Abbas to protect him and his family from settler attacks. “These people are barbarians and savages who could embark on the unthinkable.” Abu Shamsiyya added that the “Israeli army and government stand virtually powerless to rein in these hateful criminals.
The reason for this is that the government itself and the army, to a large extent, are more or less controlled by the settler camp.” In the past few years, settler terrorists crossed several red lines, including burning alive a Palestinian boy near Jerusalem, burning the home of a Palestinian family, the Dawabsheh family, resulting in the death of both parents and their child, and vandalizing several Muslim and Christian places of worship.
Last week, settler terrorists burned the home of a Palestinian witness who saw the deadly incident of burning the Dawabsheh family home. Many settlers apparently harbor a decidedly genocidal mindset vis-à-vis Palestinians and non-Jews in general.
They believe that the partial or complete physical extermination of the Palestinians, following the Biblical style, would expedite the appearance of the Redeemer or Jewish Messiah. The Redeemer, according to some Talmudic sages and Jewish mystics, would then bring about lasting salvation to Jews and the world and create a worldwide empire ruled from Jerusalem.

Israeli police raided a chicken slaughterhouse in the Bedouin town of Shaqib al-Salam in the southern Israel region of Negev at dawn on Monday and rounded up scores of Palestinians from the West Bank who worked their without permits.
One of the workers told Ma’an that around 100 Israeli police officers raided the Oof Ooz slaughterhouse and rounded up more than 100 workers.
The workers were then taken in buses to an Israeli police station before being sent back to the occupied West Bank.
“Police officers had very precise information about the place and they inspected every corner where workers could be,” the worker said, implying that the raid was made based on information received by sources within the slaughterhouse.
An Israeli police spokesman said he was looking into the reports.
Earlier this month, Israeli security forces began a crackdown on undocumented workers, detaining at least 250 Palestinians without work permits on March 10 alone.
Large-scale raids against undocumented workers have occurred in the wake of attacks against Israelis committed by Palestinians working in Israel illegally.
Palestinians who seek to work in Israel need a special work permit usually granted by the Israeli Civil Administration in coordination with the Israeli Ministry of Labor, but such permits are difficult to obtain.
The Bank of Israel reported in March that the number of Palestinians from the occupied West Bank working in Israel -- legally and illegally -- doubled in the past four years.
Tens of thousands of Palestinian workers are forced to seek a living by working in Israel as the growth of an independent Palestinian economy has been stifled in the West Bank under the ongoing Israeli military occupation, according to Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem.

Israeli soldiers invaded, on Sunday at dawn, several areas in the West Bank district of Bethlehem, kidnapped five Palestinians, shot and injured a young man in the Deheishe refugee camp.
Dozens of soldiers surrounded the Deheishe refugee camp, south of Bethlehem, before invading it, and clashed with local youths, who hurled stones and empty bottles on the invading army vehicles.
The soldiers fired many live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, gas bombs and concussion grenades.
Medical sources said a young man was shot in the shoulder, with a Toto hollow point bullet that detonates upon impact, and that another Palestinian was shot with a rubber-coated steel bullet in his arm; they were both moved to hospital suffering moderate wounds.
The soldiers also stormed and searched several homes in the refugee camp, and kidnapped three Palestinians, identified as Hamza Nasser Abu Ajamiyya, 15, Mohammad Khaled Sha’fout, 22, and Odai Adnan Shehada, 17.
The soldiers also invaded Beit Fajjar town, south of Bethlehem, broke into homes and kidnapped Na’im Saber Thawabta, 21, while resident Mohammad Ibrahim Abu Sarhan, 32, was kidnapped from his home in the al-Obeydiyya town, east of the city.

The Hamas leader Abdurrahman Shadid warned of the deterioration of health conditions among Palestinian sick prisoners in Israeli jails and called for supporting them officially and popularly.
In a press statement, Shadid pointed to the continuation of hunger strike by captive Sami Janazra for the 22nd day and by detainee Imad al-Batran for one month.
He also mentioned the suffering of a large number of captives due to Israeli deliberate medical negligence and the fact that there are 20 prisoners held in isolation cells.
Shadid urged official institutions and competent authorities to activate their role in defending Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails at the international level.
He called on human rights organizations to continue work for the sake of exposing Israeli crimes against Palestinian detainees.

On 25th March 2016, Israeli forces at Ofer military prison injured 8 Palestinians with various kinds of weapons, and later on attacked the nearby village of Beitunia, injuring even more.
A demonstration, against the Israeli military occupation and for the freedom of the prisoners, held in Ofer military prison – often in so called ‘administrative detention’ where the accused can not even expect to be charged or have a trial – was violently attacked by Israeli forces.
They shot endless rounds of tear gas at protestors, as well as rubber-coated metal bullets which injured 8 Palestinians. Additionally, Israeli forces used a new kind of stun grenade and fired live ammunition, including 0.22 caliber bullets, directly at protestors. 5 Palestinian protestors were detained by the army and taken to an unknown destination.
Later, on the same day, Israeli forces attacked the nearby village of Beitunia, where the army again used an excessive amount of stun grenades, rubber-coated metal bullets, live ammunition, and showered the village in tear gas. During this assault, 5 more people sustained injuries from rubber-coated metal bullets. In total 13 Palestinians were injured, including one in the head and one in the chest with rubber-coated metal bullets.
Israeli forces regularly use excessive force and injure protestors in demonstrations against the illegal settlements and Israeli occupation throughout the West Bank.

Israeli forces detained a Palestinian Thursday at the Erez crossing as he was attempting to leave the Gaza Strip for medical treatment in Israel, it was revealed Saturday.
A human rights lawyer told Ma’an that Sharab is the fifth case of a Palestinian patient being detained at the crossing since the start of the year.
Palestinians detained at Erez are often interrogated for several hours, sometimes for days, before they are either allowed into Israel or sent back to Gaza.
Erez is the only land crossing between the Gaza Strip and Israel, and travel is heavily restricted by Israeli authorities as part of a crippling blockade on the coastal enclave in place since Hamas took power in 2007.
As part of the siege, Israel limits medical equipment allowed into the Gaza Strip and restricts travel for doctors seeking further medical training and specialization.
According to rights group B’Tselem, “One outcome of this situation is a harsh reality in which many patients need medical treatment that can only be provided outside the Gaza Strip.... (and others) have no choice but to go without care, including people suffering from severe orthopedic problems, hearing and visual impairment and other grave illnesses.”
The UN has warned that unless current trends in the Gaza Strip are altered, the coastal enclave could become uninhabitable for residents in just five years.
"The social, health and security-related ramifications of the high population density and overcrowding are among the factors that may render Gaza unlivable by 2020," the UN's development agency said last year.

An Israeli undercover unit kidnapped late Friday six Palestinian minors from occupied Jerusalem. Local sources told Quds Press that a group of Jerusalemite youths were attacked by members of the Israeli undercover unit during the clashes that erupted in al-Tur neighborhood.
Six Jerusalemite minors were kidnapped during the attack, the sources added. Israeli police said in a statement issued Friday that five Jerusalemites were arrested for allegedly attacking Beit Orot illegal settlement with Molotov cocktails.
Along the same line, two Palestinians were detained Friday evening after Israeli forces stopped their car near Beitunia town west of Ramallah.
Many undercover Israeli soldiers join Palestinian protests as agent provocateur and incite protesters to hurl stones at Israeli soldiers, then they draw their guns and start helping their fellow military members in arresting the protesters.

Undercover Israeli forces infiltrated, on Friday evening, into the Suwwana neighborhood, in occupied Jerusalem, and assaulted a group of children, after surrounding them, and kidnapped four. The soldiers also kidnaped a child in al-‘Eesawiyya.
The Wadi Hilweh Information Center in Silwan (Silwanic), in occupied Jerusalem, said the undercover forces attacked the children close to Beit Orit illegal colony, built on Palestinian lands in Suwwana neighborhood, and kidnapped four of them.
The Israeli police said the children were taken prisoner reportedly for “hurling Molotov cocktails on the settlement.”
Many residents, including children, were injured in the Israeli military attack, and infiltration by the undercover soldiers.
Silwanic lawyer said the kidnapped children have been identified as Abdullah Samer Abu Esbeitan, 17, Bassem Maher Sbeitani, 17, Siraj Mahmoud Abu Esbeitan, 16, and Mahmoud Ahmad Abu al-Hawa, 17.
He added that they were taken prisoner at the at-Tour village junction; one of them was heading to a local pharmacy, and the others were walking back home.
Signs of physicals violence and beatings were clearly apparent on the bodies of Bassem and Siraj when the lawyer was eventually allowed to meet them.
On Friday evening, the police ordered Sondos Samir Mohammad Obeid, 15, under further interrogation; she was taken prisoner during the day after the police claimed that "she carried a knife with the intention to stab soldiers."
The child was kidnapped near the main road leading to the al-‘Eesawiyya town, in occupied Jerusalem.
