Israeli police grill lawyer Khaled Zabarqa over social media remarks
Picture
The Israeli occupation police on Sunday summoned Palestinian lawyer Khaled Zabarqa to interrogate him about his support for the Aqsa Mosque on social media.

“They want to interfere in the way we think, our faith, and our religious and political positions,” Zabarqa said in press remarks after the police finished interrogating him.

“The Aqsa Mosque will remain the symbol of our pride and the meaning of our existence on this land. Do not test us. We decided our options long time ago,” he added.

Lawyer Zabarqa — known for defending Palestinian activists in Jerusalem — criticized on social media the Israeli occupation authority for closing several gates of the Aqsa Mosque and preventing the Islamic Awqaf from opening them while allowing Jewish settlers to defile the holy site through al-Maghariba Gate.

The Israeli police on Sunday morning gave themselves the right to close most the Aqsa Mosque’s doors to Muslim worshipers, claiming it was a preventive measure to limit the spread of coronavirus.

However, they did not shut al-Maghariba Gate used daily by Jewish settlers to enter the Aqsa Mosque and allowed dozens of them to tour its courtyards in the morning.

According to local sources, police officers arrested Nahla Siyam, a pro-Aqsa activist, during her presence outside the Aqsa Mosque’s Bab al-Rahma payer building, with no reason.

After spending several hours in detention, Siyam was ordered to pay a financial penalty and handed a written police decision banishing her from the Aqsa Mosque for 15 days.

Local sources reported after Sheikh Bukairat was detained that he was undergoing interrogation at a police station in Jerusalem.

There was no information if the Israeli police released Sheikh Bukairat later.

Meanwhile, Jerusalemite activists warned against malicious Israeli intents to take advantage of the global coronavirus fears and the anti-virus measures taken by the Islamic Awqaf at the Aqsa Mosque to carry out Judaization schemes at the Islamic holy site.

The activists urged all Palestinian citizens to intensify their presence at the Aqsa Mosque in order to prevent the Israeli occupation state from exploiting the current situation to gradually empty the holy site of its Muslim worshipers.

The Administration of Islamic Awqaf and Aqsa Mosque Affairs in Occupied Jerusalem on Sunday announced its decision to shut down all the Aqsa Mosque’s enclosed prayer buildings until further notice as a precaution to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Sheikh Omar al-Kiswani, director of the Aqsa Mosque, said that all prayers would be held in the open areas of the Aqsa Mosque, adding that the holy site’s doors would remain open to Muslim worshipers.

However, the Israeli police on Sunday morning gave themselves the right to close most the Aqsa Mosque’s doors to Muslim worshipers, claiming it was a preventive measure to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The police also did not shut al-Maghariba Gate used daily by Jewish settlers to enter the Aqsa Mosque and allowed dozens of them to tour its courtyards in the morning.
