Hundreds of torture methods used against Palestinian prisoners during interrogations conducted in Israeli prisoners have been observed by human rights organisations and prisoners’ rights associations.
A report by the United Nations lists around 200 methods of torture. The Israeli rights group B’Tselem listed around 105 torture methods.
Regardless of the number, all these reports indicate a grave level of violations perpetrated against Palestinians following their arrest.
Fouad Khuffash, director of the Ahrar Centre for Prisoners’ Studies and Human Rights, suggests that torture can be divided into two categories; physical and psychological. Some believe that psychological torture is less harmful than physical torture, but the mental scars left by both can leave prisoners traumatised long after their release.
Khuffash adds: “Torture in Israeli prisons is systematic and starts from the moment a prisoner is arrested, not from the moment they begin interrogation. This is a premeditated and staged scenario that changes according to the case of the detainee and the nature of their file. Investigators alternate and play various roles assigned in advance to each investigator.”
Fahd Abu Al-Hajj, director of the Abu Jihad Centre for Prisoner Affairs at the University of Jerusalem, noted that there are 73 methods of interrogation considered to be the “most popular” in Israeli jails. These methods demonstrate the barbarism of the occupation and its lack of respect for basic standards of human rights, he stated.
He added: “Nothing evidences this more than the repeated death of prisoners under interrogation, the most recent of which was the death of the prisoner Raed Al-Jabari.”
Al-Hajj believes that the use of torture is systematic, adopted by the Israeli intelligence services and that no prisoner detained in any Israeli prison is spared.
He also explained that these methods range between severe beatings, putting prisoners under cold water followed by hot water, cuffing or restraining them with their arms behind them and then tying them to a door or window for long periods of time, often lasting hours.
Prisoners are also made to sit on chairs and beaten with sticks until they lose consciousness. These beatings may target sensitive areas of their bodies which have the potential to leave long-term negative effects, sometimes leading to chronic diseases.
Forms of torture
Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem acknowledged in its report that 105 torture methods are used against Palestinian detainees which are considered serious violations of human rights. A UN human rights committee described the torture in Israeli prisons as “crossing the line”, noting that Israel’s brutal methods of torture included breaking backs, pulling fingers apart and twisting testicles.
Israeli intelligence bases their torture of detainees on the so-called secret guidelines that were approved in 1987, after the outbreak of the first Intifada.
These guidelines allow them to apply “moderate” physical and psychological pressure on prisoners. This gives a legal cover to the torture practiced by Israeli intelligence agents.
In the last 10 years, interrogators have decreased their use of torture, moving away from physical torture and instead used harsh psychological methods that can leave enduring scars, while continuing to use direct physical torture of varying degrees.
Mohammed Kilani, who has experienced many interrogations, noted that his solitary confinement which exceeded two months during which he was forced to remain chained to a chair, was the harshest method of torture he has suffered.
He also added that throughout the entire prison system across the globe, there exists no torture method that has not been thought of or used by the Israeli authorities at some point.
According to statistics, around 72 prisoners were killed as a result of torture in Israeli prisons since 1967, out of a total number of over 200 prisoners who died behind bars.
The first prisoner to die as a result of being tortured was Yousef Al-Jabali who died on January 4 1968 in a Nablus prison. Many prisoners have since followed him, such as Qassem Abu Akar, Ibrahim Al-Rai, Abdul Samad Harizat, Attia Za’anin, Mustafa Akkawi, and others, including the most recent, Raed Al-Jabari.

Hamas slammed Israel’s abduction of the Movement’s spokesman in Ramallah, Saed Abu al-Baha, vowing that the group will forever stand its ground until the liberation of Palestine sees the day.
Hamas said, in a press statement, that Israel’s ventures to silence the voice of Hamas’s resistance icons in the West Bank shall all be doomed to failure.
The group acclaimed the upward pro-Al-Aqsa marches and rallies in the West Bank cities and villages.
Hamas hailed Abu al-Bahaa’s activism, saying such a leader has paid so heavy a price for having always stood in the frontlines of events and campaigns staged in support of holy al-Aqsa Mosque.
“Nothing shall ever snuff out the flames of our resistance fire,” the statement read.
Hamas reiterated Bahaa’s appeals to the Palestinian Authority to stop its security coordination with the Israeli occupation apparatuses and to halt its recurring cycle of arbitrary arrests and interrogation summonses in the West Bank.

The Israeli Jerusalem City Council demolished, Tuesday, a Palestinian home in Salah ed-Deen Street, in occupied East Jerusalem rendering eight family members homeless.
Sahar Sharif and her family were forcibly removed from their home, and were detained by the police, near their building, until the destruction of their home was completed.
The family was prevented from talking to anybody, while Israeli soldiers and officers surrounded the entire area.
The family lived in the 40 square/meter home since 1996, and received several demolition orders since then, but managed to delay the destruction through a lawyer, while Israel repeatedly imposed high fines reaching to more than 300.000 NIS in the last 17 years, the Maan News Agency said.
Sahar said that, two years ago, the family had to demolish a section of the building as ordered by the Jerusalem City Council, leaving them with one room to live in, until the police demolished the entire structure, Tuesday.
On Tuesday afternoon, the army kidnapped a Palestinian, identified as Jamal ‘Asaliyya, near the al-Aqsa Mosque, in the Old city of occupied Jerusalem, and took him to an interrogation facility.

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) at dawn Tuesday stepped up their abduction campaigns throughout the West Bank, Occupied Jerusalem, and Gaza, throwing Palestinian natives and residential quarters into wholesale disarray.
Local sources said the IOF at dawn Tuesday rounded up two Palestinian youths from the Aida refugee camp, north of the West Bank city of Bethlehem, after having stormed their family homes and ransacked them.
A 53-year-old ex-prisoner was nabbed by the IOF from his own family home in Marah Rabah village south of Bethlehem.
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society in Bethlehem said the IOF apprehended the elderly civilian, Youssef Ibrahim al-Sheikh, after they suddenly broke into his home, paying no heed to the cardio-vascular disorders the latter has been diagnosed with.
Meanwhile, a number of suffocations cases was detected among the schoolchildren of the Aida refugee camp following a round of clashes with the IOF.
Eye-witnesses said the invading IOF troops targeted the youths with heavy barrages of tear gas canisters and sound bombs.
Earlier, on Monday afternoon, the Israeli occupation soldiers kidnapped the Palestinian youth Ahmad Awda, 21, after dragging him to Etzion’s intelligence detention center to the south of Bethlehem city.
The IOF stormed residential neighborhoods in al-Khalil city and kidnapped another Palestinian citizen.
The Israeli occupation troops further nabbed Hamas spokesperson in Ramallah, Saed Abu al-Bahaa, and took him to an unidentified destination moments after they pushed their way into his family home.
Fuad al-Khuffash, Head of the Ahrar Center for Prisoner Studies and Human Rights, dubbed Abu al-Bahaa’s arrest an undeniable proof of Israel’s attempts at evacuating the West Bank from its resistance icons.
The flood of Israeli mass-arrests spread out to Occupied Jerusalem and culminated in the abduction of the young man Ayman Salem from Jabal al-Makbar, southeast of the city.
Sources in the Gaza Strip further reported the kidnap of two Palestinian youths, at their twenties, east of Juhr Ad-Dick town, in central Gaza following an IOF’s infiltration into the area, in another flagrant breach to the terms of the truce accord signed in Cairo a couple of months ago.
At least 470 Gazans are locked up in Israeli jails, mostly fishermen, ex-prisoners and citizens serving long sentences.
The Israeli minister of internal security, Yitzhak Aharonovich, estimated, during a Knesset hearing on Monday, the number of Palestinians detained since the latest Israeli offensive on Gaza at about 900.
