Palestinian female detainees at the Israeli Damon jail have been enduring dire detention conditions and subjected to harsh torture tactics, a human rights body has warned.
According to lawyer Hanan al-Khatib, from the Prisoners’ and Ex-Prisoners’ Commission, Palestinian women and girls at Damon prison have been made to endure excruciating psycho-physical torture.
The lawyer said the Israeli prison authorities continue to exert every possible effort to isolate the detainees and sever their ties with the outside world by preventing them from reaching out to their families and denying them prison visits.
The lawyer also sounded the alarm over the strip-searches, verbal assaults, exhausting transfers to courts, medical neglect, and overcrowding, among others policies perpetrated against the Palestinian female detainees.
22 Palestinian women and girls are incarcerated in two cells in Damon lock-up.

Amnesty International has responded to the Israeli government's decision to imprison Palestinian-French NGO worker Salah Hamouri under the widely-condemned policy of administrative detention, which allows for internment without charge or trial.
The human rights organization posted a statement on its website, quoting Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Magdalena Mughrabi, as saying, “The arbitrary detention of Salah Hamouri is yet another shameful example of the Israeli authorities’ abusive use of administrative detention to detain suspects indefinitely without charge or trial.”
On August 23, Israeli forces detained Hamouri, a field researcher for prisoners’ rights group Addameer. Hamouri, who was previously imprisoned by Israel but released in a prisoner exchange deal in 2011, was then issued a six-month administrative detention order.
However, an Israeli court later ordered Hamouri to serve the remainder of his prison sentence, approximately three months. The prosecution then appealed this sentence, and his six-month administrative detention order was reinstated.
“Rather than locking him up without presenting a shred of evidence against him, the Israeli authorities must either charge him with a genuine criminal offence or order his immediate release,” Mughrabi said.
“For 50 years, Israel has relied upon administrative detention to suppress peaceful dissent and as a substitute for proper criminal prosecution. Now they appear to be using it to target human rights activists. They must take urgent steps to end this cruel practice once and for all”, she said.
Hamouri is the second Addameer staff member who is held under administrative detention. The group’s Media Coordinator Hasan Safadi has been held under administrative detention since June 2016. Khalida Jarrar, a long-serving PLC member representing the left-wing PFLP, is also a member of Addameer’s board, and has been held in administrative detention since July 02.

The Arab Organization for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) called for representatives from the European Union, the High Commission for Human Rights and the British Embassy, to send observers to follow the trial of Sheikh Raed Salah on September 24.
AOHR UK is calling for their urgent action to send representatives through their organizations or embassies, to attend a hearing dictating the charges against Sheikh Raed Salah, to be held on September 24, 2017, the London-based organization’s statement reads.
It also called for standing against the arbitrary arrest of Salah and the fabricated accusations against him.
AOHR UK confirmed that Israeli prison authorities have not changed the poor conditions of Salah’s detention.
“Salah remains in a small cell with 24-hour surveillance cameras, with an uncovered toilet in the same place where he eats, sleeps and prays. The prison administration attributed these conditions to higher orders relayed to them.”
AOHR UK stressed the need for international representatives and human rights organizations to be present, as well as civil movements, to put pressure on the Israeli government and send a clear message that it cannot single out Salah, and that it cannot behave such arbitrarily in his trial, particularly that he has committed no crime.
He is being treated in this manner because he conducted campaigns to maintain al-Aqsa Mosque and to defend the Mosque in the face of the intrusions and excavations that are occurring, and to protect it from all attempts of division, the statement concluded.
